Ode to the Underdog

I'm an unskilled laborer - don't deserve anything but peanuts
For anyone to pay me, one would think that they would have to be nuts!
I just don't rate with all the lords and barons on their turf
For the lowest of the class in this system of recognition is a serf.

Oh, I'm a volunteer laborer, my pay is the privilege of working
Since so many want this job, they're lined up in the doorway shadow lurking
This mentality has convinced them to forget that a person is worthy of his hire
But that reward is only gauged by your "busy-ness" and how much you perspire.

Sometimes I wonder if it's muzzling the ox in the stable
Or Lazarus and the rich man, who didn't let him have crumbs from the table
I hope that I am wrong, but the ones who are bleeding the sheep to death
Will find that their Shepherd is not the One from Nazareth.

Jesus recognized that the least are the ones who are the greatest
But mankind loves the intellect, so uncommon-folk are despised, and they hate us
We're treated all like animals, since pride and arrogance is the key
But one day they will realize that appreciation and equality will be free!
